MXGP Argentina – 24MX Honda Racing Pressrelease

Race report MXGP Round 3 – Argentina

Sunday, March 29, 2015 — After a foot injury in the qualifying race of the MXGP of Qatar Christophe Charlier struggled in the previous two GP’s. The fast Frenchman bounced back at the GP of Argentina in Villa la Angostura. Charlier rode to a strong 7th in the opening moto and finished 16th in the second race to claim 12th overall, equal on points with De Dycker. Filip Bengtsson raced to 17th in moto one, but was forced to retire in the second sprint.

A fine loamy top layer gave the track a misleading sandy look, because the unpredictable hard base underneath made it challenging to find traction. During Sunday’s warmup session it seemed both Charlier and Bengtsson had found quite effective setup packages.

In spite of a mediocre start Christophe Charlier recovered well. From the second half of the field the former European MX2 champ went on to 10th at the end of the first lap. The consistent 24MX Honda rider crossed the line in 7th just a second behind Gautier Paulin. While Bengtsson had quite a good start he lost precious ground early on. For most of the race ‘Fillibang’ circulated in 16th place only to succumb to former MX2 world champ Tyla Rattray in the final stage of the race.

The second moto was a mixed affair for both riders. Charlier didn’t have a great jump out of the gate, nevertheless he fought back quickly in the next corners. He was already up in sixth in the first lap when he made an error. Once he got going he remounted to 13th but ‘CC23’ had to settle for 16th. In the confusion of the opening lap Filip Bengtsson collided with Frossard and spun off. At the bottom of one of the hills he went down and damaged his radiator. Filip gritted his teeth and soldiered on unfortunately he could not continue and had to come in.

Christophe Charlier: “It was quite a special track, unlike any other really! Overall I’m quite satisfied. I enjoyed riding and my seventh place felt good after the troubles I had in Qatar and Thailand. In the second moto I was lying sixth when I crashed and burned my hand at the exhaust. I got up again and finished 16th. It hurt but luckily the injury itself is okay. My speed gives me motivation for the rest of the season, so I go home with a smile. I’d never been to Argentina, but Patagonia was a really cool experience and both the organization and the fans were awesome here!”

Filip Bengtsson: “I’m a bit disappointed with my weekend. I would have loved that the soil was as soft as it looked! Unfortunately it had lots of strange bumps and hard, slick spots that could take you out just like that. That made it tricky to find the right settings as well. My start in the first moto was okay but I lost too many positions in the first laps. The second moto was almost over before I begun. I was around 14th place when I crashed still I felt that the rougher track might have suited me more. After three GP’s I’m nowhere near where I want to be but on the other hand it’s good now to go home and get ready for the European races.”
